What Are Collagen Injections?
Collagen is a crucial supportive protein in the connective tissues that maintain the skin’s youthful appearance. As we age, this collagen breaks down, causing unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. Collagen injections can be used to counteract this effect and minimize the appearance of facial aging.
When to Choose Collagen Injection
If you are dissatisfied with increasing facial lines and wrinkles, collagen injections can help. The best patients will be healthy and possess realistic expectations. Collagen injections can be used to treat:
- Frown lines
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Crow’s feet
Collagen can also be injected into the lips for a fuller effect. After receiving collagen injections, your face will have a smoother, more youthful appearance.
You may not be a good candidate for collagen injections if you are currently pregnant or nursing. In addition, those with bovine or lidocaine allergies may not be able to use collagen injections. Lidocaine is sometimes included in injections, which can be be derived from bovine sources.
Your Collagen Injection
In some cases, you will need to complete a skin test prior to your procedure. This will ensure that the product is a good fit for your skin. Your skin will be cleansed with an antibacterial agent prior to your procedure. A topical anesthesia will then be applied to numb the treatment area. In some cases, collagen injections contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, so additional anesthetic will not be needed
The actual injection will take just a few minutes. Using a fine needle, Dr. Jaibaji will injection collagen into pre-determined treatment areas. Deep lines often require multiple injections to achieve optimal results.
After Your Treatment
Normal activity can be resumed immediately following your procedure. The injection areas may appear slightly red for up to one week. Swelling and bruising is also a possibility, but should dissipate within 48 hours. You will need to protect the treatment area from direct sunlight for up to two weeks.
You will be able to notice immediate improvements, but the final results will not be visible for about a week. The results of your procedure will last for several months. Repeat injections 2-4 times a year may be recommended to prolong the anti-aging benefits of treatment.
All potential complications associated with collagen injections will be discussed during your consultation. Some potential risks may include uneven skin texture, infection or atypical scarring.
