Dr. Jaibaji will advise you recovery from gynecomastia surgery during your consultation. Following surgery, most patients experience swelling, bruising and discomfort for several days. Compression garments will need to be worn for at least four weeks. Your surgeon may also provide you with oral medication to alleviate some of your discomfort. All stitches are generally removed within 1-2 weeks.

Most normal activities, including work, may be resumed within a week of surgery. Strenuous exercise may be restricted for several weeks. The final results of male breast reduction are permanent and will become gradually apparent over the course of several months as swelling begins to subside and scars begin to fade.

Male breast reduction is considered safe and complications are rare, but all surgical procedures have risks. All potential risks will be discussed with you in depth during the consultation. Risks associated with male breast reduction may include infection, hematoma, breast asymmetry, nipple or areola inversion, sensory changes, excessive scarring, hyperpigmentation or undesirable cosmetic outcome.

When to Choose Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Gynecomastia can occur in one or both breasts and is rarely a life threatening condition, but the presence of enlarged or overdeveloped breasts can adversely impact a patient’s psychological and physical well-being. Male breast reduction can be performed on men of all ages. You may be a potential candidate if you meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • You are at or near an ideal body weight for your height
  • You possess good overall physical and emotional health
  • You are bothered by the size or shape or your breasts
  • Your breast development has stabilized

Male breast reduction is a safe and effective way to reduce excess fat, glandular tissue and/or skin surrounding the breast area and restore the breasts to a normal contour. Moreover, adolescents may be potential candidates for male breast reduction; however, secondary surgeries may be necessary in the future to maintain results if breast development has not stabilized.

Despite its many advantages, this procedure may not be for everyone; especially for men with significant medical conditions. The best way to determine if you are an ideal candidate for male breast reduction is to schedule a consultation with a board certified Plastic surgeon. Be prepared to discuss factors such as your medical history, current medications and aesthetic goals.

Gynecomastia treatment

Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia based on your surgeon’s recommendation. Surgery can be completed using liposuction, excision (surgical removal of tissue), or a combination of both. The method used will depend on the amount of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin that requires removal.

For large gynecomastia a breast reduction surgery is required.

In cases where liposuction is performed alone, incisions are very small and will be located near the armpits or at the areola. Where excision is needed, incisions will be placed around the areola or at the natural crease line under the breast. Following the removal of excess tissue and fat, all incisions will be closed with sutures. An elastic compression garment may be placed around the treated area to minimize swelling and discomfort.

Liposuction and Gynecomastia Surgery San Diego

Liposuction of the chest plays a big role in gynecomastia surgery. It can be the sole treatment of gynecomastia, but that is on a limited percentage of patients. Most patients will require a combination of liposuction and excision of the glandular tissue behind the nipple. In bodybuilders with gynecomastia only 5% will need liposuction.

Gynecomastia Correction in Bodybuilders San Diego

Gynecomastia affect 32%- 65% of male population. In bodybuilders gynecomastia is usually due to the use of anabolic steroids. These anabolic hormones are over the counter and their gynecomastia can persist even after discontinuation of the treatment.
The treatment of gynecomastia in bodybuilders is surgical excision. Surgery can be challenging because bodybuilder are usually perfectionist, there is increased vascularity of the glandular tissue behind the nipple.
Surgery involves excision of the glandular tissue. complete excision is necessary to avoid recurrence of the the gynecomastia.

Surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or general type of anesthesia. The incision is made in the lower part of the areola. The glandular tissue is removed. The wound is then closed with dissolvable sutures. Occasionally liposuction is required in bodybuilders to remove the peripheral fat.

After surgery, A compression dressing will be applied for about 5 days- 7 days. Light activities for one week. Lower body exercise after three weeks and upper body exercise after about six weeks.
