5 Non-Surgical Procedures to Smooth Your Skin

Your skin may lose some of its natural smoothness for a variety of reasons. Factors such as smoking, UV exposure, hormonal changes, dehydration, and simple aging can cause your skin to lose elasticity. Injury scars, acne, and other issues may also cause the skin to appear bumpy, rough, or otherwise uneven.

While plastic surgery can yield dramatic improvements by tightening loose skin and restoring a youthful appearance, you may also achieve good results through non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments administered by your plastic surgeon. Give the following five procedures serious consideration as you plan your new look.

Microdermabrasion

Superficial lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and other irregularities often respond to a technique known as microdermabrasion. While this technique does involve the mechanical removal of skin cells, this minimally-invasive procedure does not actually count as surgery. A handheld device buffs away the outer layer of skin.

Your plastic surgeon may recommend that you keep your skin hydrated at all times and protected with sunscreen when you go outdoors. You may also need to avoid the use of any topical acne creams you might normally use during the first 24 hours of healing. Any post-procedure redness and tenderness should recede within hours.

Chemical Peels

Like microdermabrasion, chemical peels involve the removal of the topmost layer of damaged, discolored, or wrinkled skin to reveal tighter, smoother, more evenly colored skin underneath. Instead of mechanically removing the skin, however, the plastic surgeon uses acidic chemicals.

Chemical peels come in different strength levels, with each level aimed at addressing a different severity of skin issue. In a multi-phased strategy, your plastic surgeon may administer a light initial peel, followed by additional peels that use stronger acid percentages. In some cases, microdermabrasion may accompany a chemical peel.

Lighter chemical peels do a good job of treating skin irregularities caused by acne, clogged pores, pigmentation problems, and fine lines. Stronger chemical peels come into play when treating deeper lines and other deformations that resist initial attempts at removal.

Collagen Injections

Age-related lines and wrinkles often develop as the skin loses its supply of collagen. This connective tissue supports the skin by laying down a dense, fibrous scaffolding of sorts, providing a firm framework for the skin’s other tissues. As the years go by, the body produces less and less collagen, while UV exposure damages the remaining collagen.

Collagen injections aim to reverse the effects of time on this component of your skin. These injections usually target specific lines and wrinkles around the nose, mouth, and other problem areas. They can also fill out pits left by facial scarring, reduce the depth of folds, and lend extra fullness to thin layers of tissue.

Juvederm

Like collagen injections, Juvederm treatment relies on injected fillers to smooth out lines and wrinkles. However, instead of injecting these areas directly with collagen, the plastic surgeon injects them with hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance that helps the body manufacture new collagen.

Juvederm treatments often take less than an hour, depending on how much assistance your skin requires. After the lidocaine included in the injections wears off, you may experience some mild itching, pain, or tenderness. Your plastic surgeon will advise you on how to protect your newly-treated skin for the first 24 hours following treatment.

Botox

Constant squinting, frowning, and other forms of facial muscular tension can create the appearance of deep lines that can age you prematurely. If you seek a non-surgical solution for these frown lines, you may want to give Botox injections some serious thought.

Botox interferes with nerve signal transmission to muscles. When you receive a Botox injection in a specific muscle, that muscle can no longer tense up to produce annoying frown lines. A single Botox treatment may continue to work for several months.
