4 Elements of a Mommy Makeover
Pregnancy and childbirth can leave mothers with lasting physical changes, some of which may make them feel self-conscious, frustrated, or embarrassed. These changes include sagging skin, drooping breasts, and stretched or weakened muscles. Fortunately, cosmetic surgery can compensate for many of these issues.
If you’ve finished having children and would like to undo the damage created by multiple pregnancies, you may want to consider a set of cosmetic procedures collectively known as a mommy makeover. Depending on your specific needs, your mommy makeover may include any of the following four types of surgeries.
1. Breast Lift and Augmentation
Pregnancy and nursing can create significant changes in the breasts. You may notice that your breasts have begun to sag or lose their symmetry. Your nipples may also have grown stretched, uneven, or enlarged. For these reasons, cosmetic surgery on the breasts often occurs as the first step in a mommy makeover. Your cosmetic surgeon can perform a breast lift procedure to counter the effects of gravity on sagging chest and breast skin.
At the same time, you may opt to have your breasts augmented, either with or without the aid of artificial implants.
2. Tummy Tuck
When you think of pregnancy, the image of a distended belly may spring to mind. Abdominal enlargement naturally occurs as the fetus grows inside the womb and the tissues around it adapt to accommodate this development. After giving birth, however, the abdominal skin and muscles may remain flabby and slack.
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can help reverse pregnancy’s cosmetic effects on the abdomen. The plastic surgeon will make an incision along the bottom of the abdomen, just above the pubic area. The surgeon removes excess skin from this area and repairs damaged abdominal muscles before stretching and reattaching the skin.
If your upper abdomen also has sagging skin, a second incision and trimming can take care of this problem. Since the stretched skin would alter the position of your belly button, the surgeon will also create a new hole in the skin that aligns with your navel.
3. Liposuction
While weight gain normally comes and goes with pregnancy, changed eating habits and reductions in physical activity can also leave you with unsightly bulges of fat. If so, you may need to have liposuction to get rid of unwanted fat cells, while your tummy tuck gets rid of unwanted skin.
In this body-contouring procedure, the surgeon uses a suction device to pull unwanted fat cells out of trouble spots, including the belly, hips, upper arms, and thighs. The skin over the remaining fat should then tighten and conform to the new contours, especially if you also get rid of loose, excess skin from pregnancy.
Although mommy makeovers should only occur after the patient has firmly decided against future pregnancies, you can rest assured that an accidental pregnancy won’t ruin the effects of your liposuction. Since liposuction permanently removes fat cells, your fat content in the treated areas should remain unchanged.
4. Buttock Augmentation
Whether pregnancy has caused your bottom to sag or you’ve always felt dissatisfied with its appearance, a mommy makeover that includes liposuction offers the perfect opportunity to lift and fill out your buttocks, thanks to a procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift.
In a Brazilian butt lift, your plastic surgeon will first remove excess buttock fat through liposuction. After processing the fact in a centrifuge, the surgeon then injects the fat back into the buttocks in strategic areas that lift and augment the buttock contours.
