Mid and Lower Facelifts By Dr. Jaibaji
Mid and Lower Facelifts
Sun damage and natural aging can leave your face looking worn and tired. If you feel younger than you look, it may be time to consider a facelift.
As variations of the facelift technique, mid or lower facelifts can address many signs of facial aging in the middle and lower regions of your face. Like the traditional facelift, these procedures can help you look 10 or even 20 years younger.
When to Choose the Mid or Lower Facelift
Your face can be segmented into three parts: the forehead, the mid-face and the neck. A facelift can be used to treat signs of aging in the lower two-thirds of your face.
You may benefit from a mid or lower facelift if you have:
- Loose skin and deep wrinkles on your cheeks and neck
- A well-defined bone structure to support adjustments
- Adequate skin quality and elasticity
An average facelift patient is between 40-70 years old, but overall health is more important than age. The best candidates for facelift surgery are healthy and do not smoke. They also have clear, realistic goals and expectations about facelift surgery.
A mid and lower facelift can be performed separately or simultaneously. The final results will take years off of your appearance. Following an examination and one-on-one discussion of your cosmetic goals and medical history, we can determine if a mid facelift or lower facelift is right for you.

A facelift is typically an outpatient procedure (you will be able to return home the same day as surgery) and can be completed in 2-4 hours. Prior to your procedure, we will administer general anesthesia, local anesthesia or conscious sedation to ensure your comfort.
Facelift incisions typically start at your hairline curving around the ears and sometimes into your lower scalp. Another incision may be placed underneath your chin. Incision patterns will depend on the extent of your facelift. When at all possible, incision lines are concealed within your hairline and natural skin folds.
During the facelift, underlying tissue will be tightened and excess fat will be removed to improve facial contour. We will then firmly re-drape your skin and trim loose skin using a scalpel or laser.
After Your Facelift in San Diego
Immediately following surgery, we will place dressings along your incisions and wrap your face in a sterile bandage. You will then be transferred to a recovery area for monitoring. When you wake up from anesthesia, it is likely that you will experience some discomfort, swelling and bruising.
You should plan to spend the first few days in bed and attend a follow-up visit within 5-10 days. At this point, you will probably feel comfortable returning to work and other light activities. It will be another 2-3 weeks before you can achieve a full recovery.
Follow all postoperative instructions after your facelift. Avoid strenuous activities until you have progressed in your healing. It will take time for swelling to fully subside and the final results of your facelift may not be evident for a few months.
All surgical procedures, including facelift surgery, present a degree of risk and uncertainty. These risks will be discussed in depth during your consultation. Though rare, risks may include changes in skin sensation, delayed healing, excessive scarring, skin loss, adverse reaction to anesthesia, infection and unsatisfactory results.
