What Type of Buttocks Augmentation Surgery Is Right for You?

Should you choose a Brazilian butt lift using your own fat cells or an implant-based buttock augmentation? If you’re not sure which of these popular options is the right procedure for you, take a look at the top questions patients have answered.

What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Do you want a rounder or fuller butt? This buttocks procedure will give you the posterior look you want  minus the need for synthetic implants. Unlike buttocks implants, a Brazilian butt lift uses your own fat to augment the area. The procedure requires the surgeon to remove fat from another area of your body via liposuction and transplant it into the buttock area. The result is a natural, shapely look.

What Is a Buttock Augmentation With Implants?

Unlike a Brazilian butt lift, augmentation with implants requires the surgeon to place artificial (man-made) silicone devices into the buttock area. This procedure also changes the shape and fullness of your backside. But it won’t include liposuction from other parts of your body. Additionally, implant surgery has immediate results.

Are Both Procedures Permanent?

Both surgical options have long-lasting results. Even though a Brazilian but lift is noticeable right away, it can take up to a year for some patients to see the full results. While it may take months or more to see the final result, the total volume isn’t permanent. Over time your body will re-absorb some of the fat grafted onto your buttocks area.

Brazilian butt lift patients typically retain between 60 and 80 percent of the grafted fat, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Along with fat absorption, patients who gain or lose weight may notice a difference in the size and shape of their buttocks. Like naturally placed fat, weight loss may deplete the buttocks area and gain may add to the fullness.

Augmentation using silicone implants is a more permanent procedure (in comparison to a butt lift). You won’t lose any of the fullness over time and your body won’t absorb the implanted devices. However, the implants can shift or move out of place. This requires a second surgical procedure to re-shape the buttocks area.

Which Procedure Has a Quicker Recovery Time?

The amount of recovery time after a Brazilian butt lift or implant augmentation surgery depends on several factors. These include the patient’s health and their ability to heal. Both options are typically done on an outpatient basis and may require several weeks of recovery time.

Recovery may include soreness, swelling, or bruising. You may also need to take time off from work and minimize physical activity as your recover. The doctor will provide instructions to follow and may prescribe or recommend a pain medication if needed.

Which Option Is Right for You?

There is no universal answer to this question. However, if you don’t have enough fat to remove, the Brazilian butt lift augmentation procedure may not be the right option.

Along with fat transfer, consider how you feel about a synthetic device inside of your body. While silicone buttocks devices are generally safe (when used correctly and by a qualified surgeon), some patients don’t feel comfortable with a non-natural material in their body.

Beyond the fat transfer versus implant decision, you also need to decide what size and shape you want. An experienced surgeon can help their patients to better understand how to choose a proportionate size and shape for their body type.
